Is it permissible in islam to observe i’tikaf for one, two or three days


Staying in mosque for the sole purpose of worshipping is called it‘ikaf.Its permissible to stay likewise for a day observing i’tikaf in mosque.

Umar ibn al-khattab(r) made a vow in pre-islamic period to observe i’tikaf.Later when Umar(r) reverted to islam, Prophet(p) was asked concerning this and he permitted him to fast.So,its permissible in islam to observe i’tikaf for a day.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَلَيَّ اعْتِكَافُ يَوْمٍ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَفِيَ بِهِ رواه البخاري


Narrated by Naf’i:

Umar ibn Al-Khattab (r.a.) asked the Messenger of Allah (p) about a vow that he made to observe the I'tikaf for one day in the Sacred Mosque during the pre-Islamic period. He asked whether he should fulfill that vow. He (p), ordered Umar to fulfill it. (Refer to Bukhari 3144, Muslim 1656).
